Bernabe "Bernie" Figueroa Williams (born September 13, 1968 in San Juan ) is a retired Puerto Rican baseball player in Major League Baseball .

biography

Bernie Williams showed great interest in baseball, classical guitar and athletics in his youth . At the age of 15, he won four gold medals at an international athletics meeting and was considered one of the best 400m runners in his age group. But he decided to pursue a career as a professional baseball player and signed a professional contract with the New York Yankees in 1985 at the age of 17 . The outfielder made his Major Leagues debut on July 7, 1991 when he was replaced by the injured Roberto Kelly . Until the injury of Danny Tartabull Williams shuttled between major and minor leagues before he took over the regular position in the center field.

His performance over the next two years was satisfactory, but not yet spectacular. Above all , he lacked the strength to hit home runs . With his performance improvement from 1995 onwards, the Yankees became an annual title contender again. In 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000 Williams and his team won the World Series . In 1998, Williams became the first major league player to earn the title of best batsman, a gold glove and a World Series title that same year. After that season, he signed a seven-year deal with the Yankees that grossed him $ 85 million.

In the final year of this contract in 2005, Williams had difficulties that were particularly evident in the defense game. Given these weaknesses, it was not surprising that the team missed an option to extend their contract for $ 15 million. However, on December 22, 2005, they agreed on a new one-year contract for $ 1.5 million.

In March 2006, Bernie Williams was in Puerto Rico's squad for the World Baseball Classics . After the 2006 season, his contract with the Yankees ran out, his last game he played on October 1, 2006. In 2007 he tried again with the Yankees, but has not yet been re-accepted into the team.
