Higashinada-ku ( Japanese 東灘 区 , dt "District East Nada") is a district ( ku ) of Kobe .

geography

Higashinada has around 4 km of paved coastline with three smaller and one large artificial island in front of it and extends in the north to the 931 m high summit of Rokkō . The most important districts of today, Mikage, Sumiyoshi and Okamoto, have grown historically, while Rokkōmichi only experienced strong development in the post-war period and Rokkō Island was not completed until the early 1990s .

history

The area belonged in the Edo period first to Han of Amagasaki , changing with the development of so-called Nadagōgō-area, one for the sake excellent -production belts of east Nishinomiya to this Hyogo-ku , for reaching the immediate area ( tenryō ) of Tennos . In 1889 , the municipality ( chō ) Mikage and the villages ( son ) Sumiyoshi, Uozaki, Honjō and Yamamoto were formed in the district of Muko ( kreis 郡 ) .

The completion of the Hanshin main line between Osaka and Kobe in 1905 gave the area a major boost, known as Hanshinkan Modernism .

In July 1938, the area experienced a particularly large flood, on March 17, 1945 air raids on Kobe destroyed the city area. After the war, both the city of Kobe in the west and the city of Ashiya as its eastern neighbor tried to incorporate the five independent administrative areas. The formation of an independent city of Kōnan was also up for discussion .

On April 1, 1950, Mikage, Sumiyoshi and Uozaki joined the city of Kobe. The claim to the traditional name Nada , which has been awarded nationwide for sake and which means "[to] the open sea", which the accession area would have rightly carried more than other communities in the Hanshin area, could not be realized because it is one District of this name already existed and the proposed name change was ultimately rejected. So the name Higashinada came about .

On October 10th of the year Honjō and Motoyama merged and joined the district. In 1993 Rokkō Island was completed.

The 1995 Kobe earthquake caused the greatest damage in Higashinada in direct action and claimed the most lives in comparison to the districts with 1471 deaths (see also: Nagata-ku ). The reasons were partly the type of development and the proportion of the district in the area with the strongest vibrations. The latter was partly due to the previous floods and landslides and the resulting lower strength of the backfilled plots. As a result of the 1995 earthquake, the population of the district decreased from 190,000 to 155,000. In 2003 the population exceeded 200,000 for the first time.
