The Rokkō ( Japanese 六甲 山 , Rokkō-san ) is the local mountain Kobe with 931 m height . Located directly in the north of the city, it serves as a local recreation area and offers impressive views of a large part of the Kansai metropolitan area . The nightly view of the sea of lights in the cities of Kobe and Osaka is particularly famous as the “10 million dollar view”.

Naming

Originally the mountain was called "Muko-yama", corresponding to the river " Muko-gawa " flowing around it on the east side . From the beginning, however, different characters were used for the two pronunciations "muko". Since the Meiji Restoration , the Onyomi reading for the first and third characters in 六甲 山 replaced the Kunyomi reading , so that today's pronunciation emerged.

Mountain range

"Rokkō-san" is commonly used to refer to the entire ridge of the "Rokkōberge" with the peaks Futatabi (463 m, north of the city center), Maya (698 m) and Rokkō (northeast of the city center).

During the great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake in 1995 , the mountain range threw the shock waves back onto the softer soil of the urban area in front of it, which caused the central strip of the tubular urban area to experience the strongest tremors.

Others

The Rokkō- Oroshi ( 六甲 颪 ) is a cooling in summer, cold in winter falling wind of the Rokkō on the city of Kobe. The hymn of the Hanshin Tigers is named after him.
