The Kōnan University ( Japanese 甲 南 大学 , Kōnan daigaku ) is a private university in Okamoto, Higashinada-ku , Kobe in Hyōgo Prefecture (Japan).
The name Kōnan means "south of the mountain Rokkō ".
history
The school was founded in 1919 by the businessman Hachisaburō Hirao ( 平生 釟 三郎 , 1866–1945) as the (older) Kōnan Middle School ( 甲 南中 学校 , Kōnan chūgakkō ). Its aim was to develop students' characteristics through respect for personality. The school developed in 1923 to the (older) Kōnan high school ( 甲 南 高等学校 , Kōnan kōtō gakkō ), 7-year school (age: 12-19). It served the sons of the entrepreneurs in Kansai as a preparatory course for the Imperial Universities .
After the Pacific War it became the Kōnan Middle School (1947; 3-year school), Kōnan High School (1948; 3-year-old) and Kōnan University (1951; 4-year-old).
The university initially had only one faculty (humanities and natural sciences), which was divided into two faculties in 1957. She then added more faculties: Economics (1952), Law (1960), Business Administration (1960), Intelligence and Computer Science (2008), Administration and Creation (Japanese マ ネ ジ メ ン ト 創造 学部 , English Hirao School of Management ; April 2009), and bio- and nanotechnology (Japanese フ ロ ン テ ィ ア サ イ エ ン ス 学部 , English Faculty of Frontiers of Innovative Research in Science and Technology , short: FIRST; April 2009).
In the 1995 Kobe earthquake , 37 students, high school and college students and university graduates died. Five school buildings were destroyed, including the former main building of the older Kōnan High School; these were rebuilt in 1997.
