Port Island ( Japanese ポ ー ト ア イ ラ ン ド , Pōto Airando , also Portopia ( ポ ー ト ピ ア , Pōtopia )) is an artificial island in Kobe , Japan . The older northern part was built between 1966 and 1980 and officially opened with the Portopia '81 exhibition . The southern part was under construction from 1986 to 2005 and is intended for industrial plants and business parks.

  • Population: 15,120 (as of October 1, 2005)
  • Area: 443 hectares (north part) + 390 hectares (south part)

In the middle of the island there is a housing estate that consists of several large apartment blocks including a complete infrastructure to supply the local population and also offers several hotels, museums and exhibition, sports and trade fair halls. The outer part is dominated by port facilities, especially warehouses, container loading stations and shipping docks. Several parks make the island appear green. The newer, southern part of the island is still largely undeveloped. In addition to further port facilities and a modern industrial area, a large medical technology and production park, the Kobe International Multimedia Entertainment City and the Kobe International Business Center are to be built here.

An amusement park called Portopia Land was closed and dismantled in March 2006 after its 25th anniversary. In its place there has been a Swedish IKEA store since 2008 .

traffic

The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and a tunnel. The island can also be reached via this bridge with the Port Liner , a fully automatic, driverless people mover system that runs from Sannomiya via Port Island to the new airport island south of Port Island.
