The port of Nagoya ( Japanese 名古屋 港 , Nagoya-kō ), opened in 1907, is the largest civil seaport in Japan. The operator and administrator has been the Nagoya Port Authority ( Nagoya-kō kanri kumiai , 名古屋 港 管理 ein ), an authority-like body of the Aichi Prefecture and the Nagoya City Administration since 1951 .
location
The port facilities are located in Ise Bay on the western outskirts of the megacity Nagoya and in Tōkai , Chita , Yatomi and Tobishima , both in Aichi prefecture. Chūbu Airport is about 10 km west of the port .
Traffic structures
The area of the port is 42.133 km². The port has 290 quays, 21 piers and five container terminals (Tobishima Pier South Container Terminal, Tobishima Pier North Container Terminal, NCB Container Terminal, Nabeta Pier Container Terminal and Tobishima Pier South Side Container Terminal).
Part of the harbor is the artificial island of Port Island ( ポ ー ト ア イ ラ ン ド , Pōto Airando ).
Economical meaning
General cargo, bulk cargo and containers can be handled in the port. In 2012, 203 million tons of cargo were handled, which corresponds to a trade value of 13.4 trillion yen. The largest share of the cargo handling is the car shipping, which makes the port the largest transshipment point for the car shipping in Japan. The Toyota Motor Corporation owns the Shimpo Pier.
