Suma-ku ( Japanese 須 磨 区 ) is a municipality ( ku ) of Kobe .
geography
The district in the west of the city extends along the coast of Osaka Bay , the land immediately rises steeply behind the coast.
history
The 1995 Kobe earthquake also hit Suma hard. Many more traditional wooden houses have been destroyed near the sea.
traffic
As in the neighboring district of Tarumi-ku , the JR Kobe Line , as a section of the San'yō main line of the JR West , the main line of the San'yō Denki Tetsudō , but also the national road 2 along the sea.
Attractions
Suma is well known for its sandy beach at Suma Kaihin Kōen Park ( 須 磨 海 浜 公園 ), which is also the closest to the city center, which is also popular with young people . Due to the water quality, the beach is more inviting for walks and beach parties etc. than for swimming, except in midsummer.
In the immediate vicinity is the Suma Municipal Aquarium , which opened in 1957 and expanded in 1987, Suma Kaihin Suizokuen ( 須 磨 海 浜 水族 園 ).
Other attractions and facilities are:
- the temple Suma-dera ( 須 磨 寺 ),
- the park Suma Rikyū Kōen ( 須 磨 離宮 公園 ) with an adventure path for children,
- the sports park Kobe Sōgō Undō Kōen ( 神 戸 総 合 運動 公園 ) with baseball stadium.
education
The Kobe Women's University is also located in Suma-ku .
