In the 1996 World Series , the winner of Major League Baseball was determined for the 92nd time .

As champions of the American League , the New York Yankees faced the Atlanta Braves as champions of the National League .

The success spoiled Yankees won their 23rd title with a 4-2 win. The series began for them with two hefty home defeats (all together 1-16), but the offensive performance of the Braves (defending champion from the previous year) was almost exhausted. The following four games were all lost to Atlanta, in Game 4 only in the 10th inning.

The series started on October 20, 1996 and ended on October 26, 1996. As the MVP of the World Series , the New York pitcher John Wetteland was awarded, who acted as the closer in all four New York wins .
