The 1989 World Series was the 86th edition of the finals of Major League Baseball between the two California teams Oakland Athletics , champions of the American League , and the San Francisco Giants , champions of the National League . The series started on October 14th and ended on October 28th, 1989. The winner of the best-of-seven series was the Oakland Athletics with a clear 4-0 sweep .
The 1989 World Series is remembered above all for a ten-day interruption after the Loma Prieta earthquake hit shortly before the start of the third game , the strongest earthquake in the region since the great earthquake of 1906 . It is therefore known today in the USA under the name "Earthquake Series" .
Since both teams come from the metropolitan San Francisco Bay Area , the World Series was originally subtitled "Battle of the Bay" . The then last World Series with teams from the same city or region took place in 1956 in New York between the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers . The next and so far last Subway Series took place in 2000 between the Yankees and the New York Mets .
As the MVP of the World Series , Oakland pitcher Dave Stewart was awarded, who scored two wins in two starts.

Game 3 was actually scheduled for October 17th. The match was supposed to start at 5:15 p.m., but at 5:04 p.m. an earthquake occurred in the bay with a magnitude of M s 7.1. At that time, broadcaster ABC was already on the air and was analyzing Game 2. The scene is still often shown in highlight shows in the USA and is famous for the quote:
"... and he fails to get Dave Parker at second base, so the Oakland A's take ...... take ........ I'll tell you what, we're having an earth .. . "
After the quake, the rescue workers were largely coordinated by an impact airship that actually drove over the area to broadcast the game on TV.
Ten days after the quake, on October 27, 1989, the game was rescheduled. The ten-day hiatus was the longest in World Series history. Out of respect for the victims of the quake, the eventual winner from Oakland was forbidden from celebrating the success with champagne, as is traditionally customary.
