Game 6 went down in baseball history for its dramatic ending. After the Red Sox were leading 5-3 in the 10th inning and had wrested two outs from the Mets , they only needed one out to win their first final since the 1918 World Series . But pitcher Calvin Schiraldi had three successive hits, so that the Mets came up to 5: 4 and Boston coach John McNamara substituted his substitute Bob Stanley for Schiraldi . Stanley started with a wild pitch, so the Mets equalized at 5: 5. Next Mets batsman, Mookie Wilson , hit Stanley's throw, but only produced a harmless scooter that first baseman Bill Buckner should have easily picked up. Instead, the ball rolled between Buckner's legs so that Mets player Ray Knight, who was on third base, scored 6: 5. Major League Baseball voted this game the third largest MLB game of all time.
