The American League and National League winners were determined between September 30 and October 19, 2014. To do this, the two wild card winners first meet in a game. The three division winners and the winner of the wild card game meet in two division series matches in best-of-five mode ( ALDS or NLDS = American or National League Division Series). Then the winners of the Division Series matches played the best-of-seven from the respective league champion ( ALCS or NLCS = American or National League Championship Series ).

Since the 2014 MLB All-Star Game was won 5-3 by the American League, the American League representative has the privilege of a fourth home game.
