In the World Series 2016 , from October 25 to November 2, the winner of the North American Major League Baseball was determined for the 112th time . The best-of-seven series is traditionally played between the winner of the American League and the champion of the National League . The two MLB teams that had been waiting the longest for the title to be repeated met each other. For the first time in 108 years, the Chicago Cubs won the title. The Cleveland Indians , on the other hand, are still waiting for their first title win since 1948 .

The American League and National League winners were determined between October 14th and October 23rd, 2016. The three division winners and the winner of the wild card game met in two division series matches in best-of-five mode ( ALDS or NLDS = American or National League Division Series). Then the winners of the Division Series matches played the best-of-seven from the respective league champion ( ALCS or NLCS = American or National League Championship Series ).

Since the MLB All-Star Game in 2016 was won 4-2 by the American League, the representative of the American League, the Cleveland Indians , had the privilege of a fourth home game.
