Finally, after injuring other pitchers, he made the jump to starting pitcher at the Boston Red Sox. At the end of the season there was an earned run average of 4.76 in 15 games. After he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma , he had to end the season in mid-August.

Lester finally celebrated his comeback against the Cleveland Indians on July 23 . He finished the season with an ERA of 4.57 in 12 games.

2008 Lester had its best season to date with an ERA of 3.21 in 33 games, two shutouts , two complete games and 152 strikeouts . He was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for July and September. In the ALDS , Lester threw 14 shutout innings against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim .

In 2009, he signed a five-year deal that would earn him $ 30 million, with an option for 2014 for $ 13 million. That year he had an ERA of 3.41 and 225 strikeouts in 32 games.

In 2010 he was selected for the first time in his career for the MLB All-Star Game , in which he pitched the sixth inning for the American League and did not allow a hit. He finished the season with an ERA of 3:25 in 32 games and 225 strikeouts.

In addition to Jon Lester (2007), only Wei-Yin Chen (2012), Andy Pettitte (2010), Eric Milton (2002) and Virgil Trucks (1945) managed a post-season game over 50 days after winning a regular season Game to score. Trucks missed the 1944 season due to his involvement in World War II and only achieved his post-season victory over 2 years later in the 1945 World Series for the Detroit Tigers against the Chicago Cubs to lead them 1-0.

Oakland Athletics

In the 2014 season he was traded by the Red Sox shortly before the deadline for the Athletics , for which he made his debut on August 2, 2014. He played 11 games for the A's and achieved a record of 6-4 with an ERA of 2.35. His contract expired at the end of the season. With the A's he was able to move into the wild card game of the playoffs. In 7.1 innings, however, he suffered 6 earned runs. The Athletics lost 8: 9 after 12 innings and were eliminated from the playoffs.

Chicago Cubs

On December 10, 2014, it was announced that Lester has signed a six-year contract worth $ 155 million and a seventh year option (total value with option $ 170 million) with the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs were able to prevail in the negotiations against, among others, Lester's former team from Boston and against the San Francisco Giants , the champions of the 2014 season .

No-hitter

On May 19, 2008, Lester threw a no-hitter against the Kansas City Royals . In the 7-0 victory of the Red Sox, he only allowed 2 walks and threw 9 strikeouts, with the no-hitter still having to be saved by center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who made an incredible jump to catch the ball in the fourth inning and thus could prevent a hit.
