Wilver Dornell Stargell , called Willie , (born March 6, 1940 in Earlsboro , Oklahoma , † April 9, 2001 in Wilmington , North Carolina ) was an American baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates in Major League Baseball (MLB).
Stargell played in the MLB from 1962 to 1982 with the Pittsburgh Pirates on the position of Left Fielder . In his long career, he won the World Series in 1954 and 1979, was called up to the All-Star Team seven times and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the National League in 1979. In 1971 he led the NL in home runs , 1973 in home runs and RBIs .
In 1988 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame with 82% of the vote in the first year of election. His jersey number 8 is no longer awarded by the Pirates. Stargell was nicknamed "Pops".
