José Carlos Altuve (* 6. May 1990 in Puerto Cabello ) is a Venezuelan baseball player at the position of the second baseman for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). The Astros signed Altuve as a free agent on March 6, 2007 and he made his MLB debut on July 20, 2011. With a height of 1.68 meters, he is currently the smallest player in the league. From 2014 to 2017, Altuve had at least 200 hits each year and led the American League (AL) in each category.

Altuve has already participated in the MLB All-Star Game six times . In 2017 he won the American League's Most Valuable Player Award , the Hank Aaron Award, and won the World Series with the Astros. The Sports Illustrated chose him in 2017 together with JJ Watt for Sportsman of the Year . He has won four Silver Slugger Awards and one Gold Glove Award to date . Altuve played for the Venezuelan national baseball team at the 2017 World Baseball Classic .

Life

Altuve was born on May 6, 1990 in the Venezuelan city ​​of Puerto Cabello and grew up in Maracay . He and his wife Nina Altuve have a daughter named Melanie who was born on November 1, 2016.

2011-2014

Altuve made his MLB debut on July 20, 2011. On August 20, 2011, he hit an inside-the-park home run , the first of his career. He finished the season with a batting average of .276 with two home runs and seven stole bases . In the 2012 season, Altuve made his first appearance in the MLB All-Star Game . In 2014 he played for an MLB selection team in the MLB Japan All-Star Series . 2015

In 2015, Altuve was re-elected to the All-Star Game and became the Astros player on September 11, 2015 with the fastest 800 hits. He led the league in Stolen Bases (38) and Fielding Percentage (.993) at the end of the season and had the third best batting average (.313). The Astros reached the playoffs that year and won the wild card game against the New York Yankees . Altuve scored one of the 3 runs in the 3-0 win. The American League Division Series lost the Astros in five games against the Kansas City Royals . On November 10, 2015, Altuve won its first Gold Glove Award . He also won the Silver Slugger Award one more time.

2011-2018

In June 2016, Altuve was named Player of the Month in the American League. He also had his fourth appearance in the MLB All-Star Game, his second in the starting lineup. On August 16, Altuve became the fastest player in the Astros to hit the 1000 hit mark after 786 games and the second fastest active player at the time after Ichirō Suzuki . It won the Sporting News Player of the Year award from sports magazine The Sporting News. In the vote for the MLB Most Valuable Player Award , he finished third after Mike Trout and Mookie Betts .

Also in the 2017 season, Altuve was elected to the American League All-Star Team. The Astros reached the postseason one more time. In Game 1 of the 2017 American League Division Series , Altuve hit three home runs, which had previously only been achieved by nine players in an MLB postseason game. In Game 7 of the 2017 American League Championship Series , the Astros won against the New York Yankees . Altuve hit a solo home run in that game. This was the second time the Astros reached the World Series in the history of the franchise , winning their first World Series title in Game 7 against the Los Angeles Dodgers . Altuve won in 2017 together with his teammate Justin Verlander the Babe Ruth Award for the best performance in the postseason.

Prior to the 2018 season, Sports Illustrated voted Altuve the second best active baseball player in 2018 after Mike Trout . On 16 March, he signed a five-year contract with the Astros for 151 million US dollars . It was the largest contract in the history of the franchise . In three games against the Cleveland Indians from May 25-27, 2018, he broke his own franchise record with 10 hits in ten consecutive at-bats. With the most votes among all players (4,849,630), he was once again elected to the All-Star Team of the American League.
