José Albert Pujols (born January 16, 1980 in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic ) is a baseball player in Major League Baseball . He plays for the Los Angeles Angels team in the American League as first baseman and designated hitter (DH).

Pujols made his MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in April 2001 and was instantly one of the top hitters , earning him the National League Rookie of the Year award. He even made it into the top five of the Most Valuable Player election (best player of the season).

On February 20, 2004, Pujols signed a $ 100 million 7-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals with an option for an 8th year, which ties him to the club until 2010. In the next few years he confirmed his playing qualities and was the first player ever to hit more than 30 home runs in the first 5 seasons . This achievement earned him the National League MVP award for the first time in 2005 . In the previous 4 years he had been voted one of the top 5 players each time, but the trophy was awarded each time by Barry Bonds from the San Francisco Giants .

In April 2006 he set a new major league record for a month with 14 home runs. In October 2006, he led the St. Louis Cardinals to the first World Series title in 24 years, making it the franchise's tenth World Series title .

After the 2010 season, Albert Pujols was the only player in the history of the Major Leagues to have achieved at least 30 home runs, 100 RBIs and a batting average of 300 in each of his ten professional seasons.

In the 2011 season, Albert Pujols won the World Series again with the St. Louis Cardinals. In the 2011 World Series , the Cardinals defeated Texas Rangers 4-3 after falling 2-3. In the third game of the series at Arlington, Pujols hit three home runs. He is only the third player after Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson to have achieved this in the World Series.

After the 2011 season, Pujols was able to switch to a team of his choice as a free agent . He chose the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, with which he signed for 10 years. With a guaranteed salary of $ 240 million, which can be increased to up to $ 265.75 million through bonus payments, the contract is the second highest in baseball history.
