Ryan James Howard (born November 19, 1979 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is a retired American baseball player . He played from 2004 to 2016 as first baseman with the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League (NL) of Major League Baseball (MLB).
Howard was drafted by the Phillies in the fifth round after his college days , he played for various minor league farm teams of the Philadelphia club until 2004 , before making his MLB debut on September 1, 2004. In 2005 he was named Rookie of the Year of the National League, an award for the best young professional. After an outstanding summer 2006, in which he was twice in a row (August / September) player of the month, he was also voted MVP , as well as the best offensive first baseman of 2006 in the National League. Howard is only the second baseball player to become the first best junior player and MVP in two consecutive years.
In 2008, Howard and his team won the 2008 World Series against the Tampa Bay Rays . Howard himself got three home runs over the course of the series .
In the 2009 playoffs, he became the first player in the league's history to score at least one Run Batted In (RBI) in seven consecutive games .
