Manuel Aristide "Manny" Ramírez (born May 30, 1972 in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic ) is a former baseball player in the North American Major League . He is an outfielder and last played for the Tampa Bay Rays . He resigned after being caught doping for the third time.

In 1985 Ramirez came to New York with his parents . In 1991 he graduated from George Washington High School in the Bronx . He made three All-City selections and was named New York City Public Schools High School Player of the Year . In the same year he began his career with the Burlington Royals in the Appalachean League , where he became Short Season Player of the Year and narrowly missed the Triple Crown .

From 1993 on Ramirez played in the Major League for the Cleveland Indians , where he was part of the regular cast from the 1995 season with over 100 appearances per year. Before the 2001 season, he moved to the Red Sox. Up to and including 2008, he had a batting average of .314 and 526 home runs in his career . In 1995 and continuously since 1998 he was part of the All-Star-Team of the American League. In 1999 and 2004 he received the Hank Aaron Award for the best batter in the league. He was also named the World Series MVP in 2004.

Ramirez joined the 500 home run club on May 31, 2008 .

On July 31, 2008, the Boston Red Sox traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers; in return they received Jason Bay from the Pittsburgh Pirates . For his accomplishments in August 2008 (.415 batting average with seven doubles, nine home runs, 25 RBI and 21 runs) he was named National League Player of the Month. He won the National League West with the Dodgers and defeated the Chicago Cubs in the Division Series . After the season, he extended his contract with the Dodgers for two years and $ 45 million.

In May 2009, Ramirez was banned from playing 50 games because an agent was found in his body that conceals the abuse of steroids. He returned to the Dodgers' starting grid in July 2009. On July 30, 2009, the New York Times reported that Ramirez tested positive for performance-enhancing substances in 2003.

The 2010 season began with a milestone for Ramirez: on April 10, he hit his 2,500. Hit . During the season, however, he had to accept three breaks due to injuries and lost his place on the starting line-up to Scott Podsednik . On August 30, 2010, he moved to the Chicago White Sox . He was used there as a designated hitter . After the end of the 2010 season, Manny Ramirez left the White Sox again and signed a one-year contract for $ 2 million with the Tampa Bay Rays.

In April 2011, the twelve-time baseball all-star and two-time World Series winner, who hit 555 home runs in his career, retired. The Tampa Bay Rays player had "undefined anti-doping rule violations," a Major League Baseball (MLB) statement said: "Instead of accepting a 100-game ban, Ramirez has it MLB informed of his retirement from active sport. " His club was both surprised and disappointed by the current allegations, but did not want to comment on the allegations.

Only Ramirez, Babe Ruth and Carlos Beltrán managed to hit 2 home runs 3 times in a post-season game. Ruth even managed the feat 4 times (all in the World Series for the New York Yankees ).
