Joseph Daniel "Joey" Votto (born September 10, 1983 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB). He plays as first baseman for the Cincinnati Reds and won the 2010 National League MVP Award and the Lou Marsh Trophy for Sportsman of the Year in Canada.
Career
Votto was discovered by the Cincinnati Reds in 2002. He was invited to the Cincinnati Reds ' spring training in 2007 and made it into the Reds' 40-man squad. Before he was allowed to play, he should prove himself again at the Louisville Bats.
On September 1, 2007, he was called up for the Reds game against the New York Mets . He made his debut for the Cincinnati Reds on September 4, 2007, but was beaten by Guillermo Mota through strikeout . After that, Votto's career went very well and in 2007 he hit four home runs and five run batted in (RBI). In 2008 Votto hit 24 home runs and 84 RBI. In the 2008 “Rookie of the Year” election, he was narrowly defeated by the Chicago Cubs catcher Geovany Soto.
In 2009 Votto became a top performer in the team around manager Dusty Baker. Votto hit 25 home runs and 84 RBI in 2009 despite having to sit out 31 games because he had a serious infection in his inner ear . Nevertheless, he was named “Player of the Week” in a week of September after 10 RBI in five games. 2010 turned out to be an almost perfect year after a good 2009, when Votto hit 37 home runs and 113 RBI. In 2010 he was the fourth best batter in the MLB season.
In 2011, he signed a three-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds for a total salary of $ 38 million.
