Kevin Edmund Youkilis (born March 15, 1979 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball , who last played for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in the NPB . The first baseman / third baseman took part in the MLB All-Star Game three times and is a two-time winner of the World Series .

"Youk" caused a sensation in minor league baseball with his ability to achieve many walks and thus a high on-base percentage . In reference to his Greek-sounding name, he was nicknamed "Euclis, Greek God of Walks" (Euclis, the Greek god of walks) and made his debut in 2004 for the Boston Red Sox . He immediately won the World Series as a substitute and established himself as a starting first baseman with the Red Sox. He had a good season in 2007, playing nine games in a row with at least two hits , playing 190 games without an error , and scoring a rare inside-the-park home run. He was part of the Boston team that won the 2007 World Series. In 2008 Youkilis, who also played third baseman if necessary , achieved career highs of 29 home runs, .305 batting average , .413 on-base percentage, 115 run batted in . He came third in the MVP (Most Valuable Player) election and was voted into the All-Star Game for the first of three times. In 2009 Youkilis took part for the USA in the World Baseball Classic 2009 , and made it back to the All-Star Game. 2010 was not good for him when he pulled his thumb and could not build on his achievements. When the following years did not go as desired, he was given to the Chicago White Sox and then to the New York Yankees , for whom he played in the 2013 season. For the 2014 season he then moved to the Tōhoku Rakuten Golden Eagles .

In October 2014, Youkilis announced his retirement from baseball.

Origin and private life

Youkilis is married to Julie (née Brady), with whom he has a son. Since the marriage, the American football player and multiple Super Bowl winner Tom Brady has been his brother-in-law , and his wife, supermodel Gisele Bündchen , his sister-in-law . Youkilis himself is of Romanian-Jewish descent, despite his Greek-sounding name: his ancestor, who was once called “Weiner”, emigrated from Romania to Greece for fear of anti-Semitism and adopted the local name “Youkilis”. Youkilis expressed interest in playing for Israel in the 2013 World Baseball Classic , but Israel missed out on qualifying .
