Christian Stephen Yelich , nickname Yeli , (born December 5, 1991 in Thousand Oaks , California ) is an American baseball player who currently plays in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a right fielder with the Milwaukee Brewers . In the 2018 season he was elected MVP of the National League .
Career
Yelich was selected by the Miami Marlins in the first round of the 2010 MLB Draft . He spent the next few years in the minor league system of the franchise . During the 2013 season he was promoted to the major league team, making his MLB debut on July 23, 2013. In the following season, he was rewarded as the youngest player in the history of his franchise for his defensive achievements with a Gold Glove . On March 22, 2015, the Marlins announced the extension of Yelich's contract by seven years until 2021, with an option for an additional year. Yelich secured a salary of $ 49.57 million.
In January 2018, Yelich moved to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange with four young players . His first season with the Brewers was his best to date: He was elected to the All-Star team and became the first Brewers player to finish a season with the highest batting average in the National League. After all, he was elected National League MVP by a large margin. He was able to confirm these achievements in the following season. In the MVP election, he came in second behind Cody Bellinger . In March 2020, Yelich signed a new contract that tied him to the Brewers for $ 215 million until at least 2028, making him the most expensive player in franchise history.
