The MLB All-Star Game 2019 was the 90th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game between the selection teams of the American League (AL) and the National League (NL). It took place on July 9, 2019 at Progressive Field in Cleveland . The American League won the game 4-3, making it the seventh straight win for the American League. Shane Bieber was named MVP.
The decision to designate Cleveland as the host city was announced on January 27, 2017 by Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred. It was the sixth All-Star Game in Cleveland and the first since 1997. This makes the Indians the team that has hosted the most All-Star Games to date. It was also the first time since 2014 that an American League team has hosted the event. This All-Star Game also coincided with the 25th anniversary of Progressive Field, making it the second All-Star Game on the field. Alex Cora of World Series Champion Boston Red Sox was directing the American League and Dave Roberts of the Los Angeles Dodgers was directing the National League for the second year running.
The fan voting began on April 4th and ended on June 30th. As with the previous All-Star Games, the most frequently chosen players in each position were the starters for their respective positions. Exceptions exist in the case of injuries, exposure or other problems. The reserve players are selected in a more complicated way.
The competition for the 2019 All-Star Game began in 2014. Cleveland's choice for the 2019 All-Star Game was heavily influenced by two main factors. The first concerns the recent improvement across downtown Cleveland. The second factor is the recent success of the Indians. The highlight of this success was the appearance in the World Series 2016 . Speaking of the city and its reaction to the World Series, Commissioner Manfred stated, "Cleveland is a baseball city and will be a great host for the classic". The recent renovations and improvements in Progressive Field also influenced the decision.
