Jorge Luis Polanco , nickname Chulo , (born July 5, 1993 in San Pedro de Macorís , San Pedro de Macorís ) is a Dominican baseball player . He has been playing shortstop for the Minnesota Twins in Major League Baseball (MLB) since 2014 .

Career

Polanco signed his contract with the Minnesota Twins in 2009 and made his debut for the Dominican Summer League Twins in 2010 . In the same year he also played in the Gulf Coast League . In 2011 he continued to play in the Gulf Coast League and made 51 games for the Twins and had a batting average (AVG) of .250 with one home run (HR) and 16 batted in runs (RBI). In 2012 Polanco played for Elizabethton Twins on a Minnesota Twins farm team and had a batting average of .318 with five home runs in 51 games. After another year in the Twins' farm team, Polanco was finally appointed to the franchise's 40-man squad in November 2013; However, the 2014 season only started with the Fort Myers Miracle in the Florida State League .

On June 26, 2014, Polanco made his MLB debut wearing the Twins' jersey against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim . In the game he was substituted on as a pinch hitter . The Twins lost the game by 4-6.

In 2014 and 2015, Polanco only played nine games in the MLB. His first long season was to be in 2016; that year he played 69 games and had a batting average of .282 with four home runs and 27 RBIs. In the following season, Polanco was placed in the position of the short stop and appeared in the jersey of the Twins 133 times.

After Polanco tested positive for stanozolol , a performance-enhancing steroid, the MLB banned him for 80 games on March 18, 2018. After the suspension expired, he was used again as a shortstop with the Twins. Despite the suspension, Polanco played 77 games for the Twins and closed the 2018 season with a batting average of .288 with 6 home runs and 42 RBIs.

On April 5, 2019, Polanco hit a cycle against the Philadelphia Phillies (one single, double, triple and home run in one game). Despite his good offensive performance, the Twins lost the game 4–10. In July of the same year, Polanco was selected on the starting line-up of the American League (AL) for the All-Star Game .
