The Florida State League is a minor league baseball league based in the state of Florida . It is one of three leagues that is currently classified in Class A-Advanced. Every team in the league is affiliated with a major league baseball team , and most play at their partner's spring training facility.

The league was founded in 1919 and has continued almost uninterrupted to this day. Most Florida State League players don't reach this level until their third or fourth year of professional baseball.

history

The league was formed in 1919 with teams in Bartow , Bradenton , Lakeland , Orlando , Sanford and Tampa . The league disbanded in 1928, but resumed gaming in 1936. The league continued uninterrupted, with the exception of a four-year (1942-1945) suspension during World War II.

In 2009 the Florida State League established a Hall of Fame to commemorate the great players, managers, owners and referees of the league.

The championship was first canceled in 2001 when the playoffs were canceled after the 9/11 attacks . After that, the 2004 playoffs were canceled due to the threat of Hurricane Ivan . Years later, the final of the 2017 FSL Championship on September 5 was canceled due to the threat of Hurricane Irma . The game of the championship series was canceled for the third time since 2000.
