Bartow is a city and also the county seat of Polk County in the US state of Florida with 17,298 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Bartow is also known as The City of Oaks and Azaleas because of its tall oak trees built around Victorian houses in the early 20th century and its colorful past.

geography

Bartow is located on the Peace River and is approximately 50 km east of Tampa .

history

Bartow was originally called Fort Blount but was renamed after the American Civil War, in honor of Francis S. Bartow, the first Confederate official to die in the war. The land for urban development was originally donated by the King of the Crackers, Jacob Summerlin , who also founded the city of Orlando. Bartow was the largest town in Polk County until the 1930s, when it was overtaken by Lakeland and Winter Haven.

Bartow received a connection to the main line of the South Florida Railroad at Lake Alfred in 1885 connection to the railway network.

Religions

In Bartow there are currently 34 different churches with 12 different denominations. Among the churches belonging to a denomination, the Baptist congregation is most strongly represented with 11 churches. There are 3 churches that do not belong to any denomination (as of 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 17,298 inhabitants were distributed over 7,130 households. The population density was 594.4 inh / km². 67.6% of the population identified themselves as whites, 23.7% as African-Americans , 0.3% as Indians and 1.1% as Asian Americans . 4.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.5% to several ethnic groups. 14.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 35.6% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 30.1% of all households. 67.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.12.

28.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 47.0% of the population were male and 53.0% were female.

The median annual income was $ 46,034, with 17.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 92.57% of the population, 7.01% spoke Spanish and 0.42% spoke French .

Bartow is crossed by US Highways 17 ( SR 555 ) and 98 ( SR 35 ) and Florida State Road 60 . The city has its own airport for small aircraft, Bartow Municipal Airport . The nearest international airport is Tampa International Airport (around 80 km west).

The crime rate in 2010 was 489 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were three murders, six rapes, 34 robberies, 69 assaults, 247 break-ins, 767 thefts, 36 car thefts and one arson.
