Kathleen is a census-designated place (CDP) in Polk County in the US state of Florida with 6332 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Kathleen is about 30 km northwest of Bartow and about 45 km east of Tampa .

history

The name of the place allegedly goes back to a Mrs. Catherine Prine who is believed to have moved to the area from Hillsborough County as a child . There has been a post office in Kathleen since 1886 .

On the evening of October 18, 2019 , a tornado formed, triggered by Tropical Storm Nestor , which reached strength EF2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale . The tornado hit the town and caused significant damage to more than 50 houses, a church and a school.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 6,332 inhabitants were distributed over 2,463 households. The population density was 736.3 inh / km². 90.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 2.1% as African American , 0.5% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 3.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.4% to several ethnic groups. 12.1% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 40.0% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 23.7% of all households. 76.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.96 people and the average family size was 3.28 people.

29.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 30.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 16.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 37 years. 49.7% of the population were male and 50.3% were female.

The median annual income was $ 44,484, with 21.1% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 93.53% of the population and 6.47% spoke Spanish .
