Georgius Trajectinus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georgius Trajectinus , actually Georg Utrecht , (* probably after 1550 in Hamburg ; † April 2, 1605 there ) was a German teacher , poet and humanist .

Life

Georgius Trajectinus's real name was Georg Utrecht, but, as was common among humanists at the time, he preferred the Latin spelling of his name. His father was Johann Utrecht (Trajectinus) (* 1525 in Stade) and worked as a principal at a Latin school in his native town. In 1527 he was elected a deacon at the main church Sankt Petri in Hamburg . Georgius Trajectinus attended the Johanneum School of Scholars and enrolled at the University of Wittenberg in September 1578 . There he studied likely ancient languages and evangelical theology. As early as 1580 he took over the post of vice principal of a Latin school in Rostock . In 1583 he enrolled as a master's degree at the University of Rostock .

On October 26, 1584, Trajectinus took over a position as deputy headmaster at the Johanneum School of Academics in his native town, presumably due to significantly better wages. In 1585 he married Martha Praetorius. In the same year he owned vicarages in the Hamburg Cathedral and the main church of Saint Catherine . Trajectinus died of the plague in 1605 .

Works

Georgius Trajectinus edited a rhetorical treatise by Cicero for use at the Johanneum School of Scholars. In addition, he occasionally wrote Latin poems, so-called carmina casualia , which were often dedicated to unique occasions and were only printed once. A reprint made at the end of the 20th century is only known of the poem Hamburgum , which is located below a copper engraving made by Peter van der Doort on a single-sheet print. A facsimile made in 1905 has survived , presumably due to its destruction during World War II . In the Latin text, which he apparently wrote for the copperplate, Trajectinus praises Hamburg and the Elbe . The author of the poem, which begins with the initials “G. T H. “, was not known for a long time. Due to the initials and the source location, however, the poem can clearly be assigned to Trajectinus.
