Polk City is a city in Polk County in the US state of Florida with 1,562 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Polk City is about 35 km north of Bartow and about 50 km southwest of Orlando .

history

In the 1920s, the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad built a railway line from Auburndale via Polk City to Coleman , which was closed again in 1988 shortly after the takeover by CSX . In the course of the railway construction, the Town of Polk City was founded on April 3, 1925 . In 2005 the town became a city . The General James A. Van Fleet State Trail now runs along the section between Polk City and Mabel (47 km north) .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 1562 inhabitants at that time were distributed among 789 households. The population density was 781 inhabitants / km². 92.5% of the population identified themselves as whites, 1.0% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 0.6% as Asian Americans . 3.6% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.9% to several ethnic groups. 12.1% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 25.7% of all households lived in 37.7% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 74.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.76 people and the average family size was 3.12 people.

27.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 39 years. 50.1% of the population were male and 49.9% were female.

The median annual income was $ 39,583, with 26.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 96.84% of the population and 3.16% spoke Spanish .
