Markus Lynn "Mookie" Betts (born October 7, 1992 in Nashville , Tennessee ) is an American baseball player for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball (MLB) and a professional bowler in the Professional Bowlers Association. He previously played for the Boston Red Sox . In 2018, he became the first player in Major League history to win the Most Valuable Player Award , Silver Slugger , Gold Glove , batting titles and the World Series that same season .

Betts was drafted by the Red Sox in 2011 and made his MLB debut in the 2014 season, dividing the time between second base and outfield . He became the Red Sox's center fielder in 2014 before moving to Right Field in 2016 .

Betts is also a professional bowler for the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA). He once scored a perfect 300 in the PBA World Series of Bowling.

Early career

In 2010, his junior year at Overton, Betts hit .548 with 24 steals. In November of that year, Betts committed to attend the University of Tennessee . There he received a baseball scholarship. The Vanderbilt University , the Mississippi State University and the University of Alabama to recruit tried in Birmingham bed.

Career

Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox selected Betts in the 5th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft with the 172nd pick. After long negotiations, Betts decided against playing at the University of Tennessee and signed a $ 750,000 deal with the Red Sox.

Minore League Baseball

Betts played two games in 2011 for the GCL Red Sox of the Gulf Coast League and scored two hits in four at-bats.

In 2012, he played for the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League and hit .267 and had 20 steals in 71 games. There he played regularly as a shortstop.

Betts began the 2013 season with the South Atlantic League's Greenville Drive . In 76 games, Betts beat .296 with a 19-game hitstreak and was selected for the South Atlantic League All-Star Game. On July 9, Betts was promoted to the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League . Betts was named Offensive Player and Breakout Player of the Year in the Boston Red Sox Organization. He led the slugging percentage among all Sox minor league players at .506. His batting average of .314 was third behind Alex Hassan (.338) and Garin Cecchini (.322). Betts was the runner-up on the America Minor League All-Star Team of 2013. The first place for second base went to Marcus Semien . Betts played after the season 16 games for the Surprise Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League and hit .271.

Betts opened the 2014 season with the Portland Sea Dogs of the Eastern League , beating .355 in 54 games. On June 3, Betts was promoted to the Pawtucket Red Sox of the Triple-A International League , beating .335 in 45 games.

2014

Betts was promoted from the Pawtucket Red Sox to the Boston Red Sox on June 28, 2014. He had previously been selected for the All-Star Futures Game, but was replaced after his promotion to the Major League.

Betts made his debut on June 29 against the New York Yankees . He scored his first MLB hit against starter Chase Whitley in the fourth inning . He scored his first home run on July 2 against the Cubs pitcher Carlos Villanueva .

On August 29, Betts hit his first Grand Slam against Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Archer in a Red Sox win at Tropicana Field . At age 21, Betts was the youngest Sox player in 49 years to hit a Grand Slam. Betts spent most of the 2014 season in the outfield, but on September 11, manager John Farrell announced that Betts would play regularly at second base after injuries to regular second basemen Dustin Pedroia and Brock Holt .

Betts played pretty evenly with the Portland Sea Dogs, Pawtucket Red Sox, and Boston Red Sox for the 2014 season , making 52 MLB games. He played well for the Red Sox, beating .291 with five home runs. He played over half of his inning at center field.

2015

On April 6, 2015, the opening day of the Boston Red Sox against the Philadelphia Phillies , he hit a home run, becoming the third-youngest player to hit a home run on the opening day of the Red Sox. On April 13, 2015, in the Fenway Park home opener against the Washington Nationals , he stole a home run from Bryce Harper , stole two bases in one play, and hit the green monster home run , all in the first three innings.

Betts was named AL Player of the Week for the week ending June 21, 2015. Within that week, Betts beat .581 (18 for 31) with two home runs, two triples, three doubles, seven RBIs and eight runs. He led the AL in the batting average, hits, on-base percentage (.594), total bases (31) and slugging percentage (1,000) this week. He spent some time in the right outfield during the latter part of the season, creating speculation that he would play there permanently to allow teammate Jackie Bradley Jr. to play in center field. Betts finished the 2015 season with a batting average of .291, 92 hits, 77 RBIs, 18 home runs and 21 stole bases.

2016

Betts was selected for the 2016 MLB All-Star Game . On September 20, Betts became the first player to hit 200 hits during the 2016 MLB season . In 158 games, Betts finished the season with a batting average of .318, 214 hits, 122 runs, 42 doubles, 31 home runs, 113 RBIs and the MLB leading 359 total bases.

Wilson Sports Goods named Betts Defensive Player of the Year in Right Field and All Fielders.

Betts had surgery on his right knee in November.

2017

From September 12, 2016 to April 19, 2017, Betts maintained a series of 129 consecutive at-bats without a strikeout . He was selected for his second American League All-Star Game. Originally selected as a reserve, on July 3, Betts was announced as a starter in place of Mike Trout, who was unable to play due to surgery on his thumb.

Betts finished the season with a batting average of .264, 101 hits, 26 stolen bases, 24 home runs and 102 RBIs. He won his second consecutive Golden Glove Award that season.

2018

On April 17, 2018, The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo published a column entitled "Mookie Betts or Mike Trout: Who gets the nod?" Comparing Betts to Mike Trout. Out of the 10 professional evaluators Cafardo asked, seven chose Trout and three Betts. That same night, Betts hit three home runs in the Red Sox's 10-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels , in which Mike Trout played. It was the third three home run game of his career. Betts set the new franchise record on May 2 by hitting three home runs in a 5-4 win over the Kansas City Royals . Betts was now the only player in the Red Sox, and in all of MLB history, to score four three-homerun games before the age of 26.

On June 1, Betts was placed on the 10-day Disabled List with a left abdominal strain. He returned on June 11th. On July 6, Betts hit his 22nd home run of the season, the 100th of his MLB career. He became the fourth Red Sox player to hit 100 home runs before turning 26. On July 8th, he was elected to the MLB All-Star Game 2018 . In a game against the Toronto Blue Jays on August 9, struck a cycle and became the 21st player in the history of the Red Sox franchise to accomplish this feat.

On September 26, Betts stole his 30th base of the season, becoming the second player in Red Sox history to join the 30-30 club (the first was Jacoby Ellsbury in 2011).

Betts finished the 2018 season with a batting average of .346, a slugging percentage of .640 and 129 runs. The Red Sox finished the year at 108-54, winning the World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers . During the postseason, Betts hit 13 for 62 (.210) with a home run and four RBIs. After the season, Betts won his third consecutive Gold Glove. and was named an American League MVP on November 15, making him the only player in American League history to win the World Series, a Gold Glove Award, a Silver Slugger Award, and the AL MVP that same season.

2019

Ahead of the 2019 season, manager Alex Cora announced that he would appoint Andrew Benintendi as the team's lead-off hitter and Betts as the second hitter. The team has thus swapped the usual batting order from 2018. In early June, Cora announced that Betts would again be the team's lead-off hitter for the remainder of the season. Betts was selected as the reserve outfielder for the 2019 All-Star Game . On July 26, Betts had the fifth three homer run game of his career, hitting a home run in each of his first three at At Bats against James Paxton of the Yankees . During the season, Betts appeared in 150 games and posted a batting average of 295 with 29 home runs and 80 RBIs.

Los Angeles Dodgers

On February 10, 2020, Betts and David Price traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. In exchange, the Red Sox received Alex Verdugo , Connor Wong and Jeter Downs . On July 22nd, Betts signed a contract extension for 12 years until the 2032 season . The contract was valued at $ 365 million and included a $ 65 million signing bonus, making it the highest contract in the history of the Dodgers and the third highest contract in the history of North American sport.

2020

Betts was the starting right outfielder on his debut for the Dodgers against the San Francisco Giants on July 24, 2020. In that game he scored his first hit for the Dodgers, a single against pitcher Tyler Rogers .

bowling

Betts is an avid bowler. He bowled in his youth and competed in the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) World Series of Bowling in Reno , Nevada in 2015 and 2017 . He played three perfect games on January 27, 2013, February 2, 2016, and November 12, 2017. His highest game in the PBA competition is a 300 game during the World Series of Bowling on November 12, 2017. In February 2019, he won the CP3 PBA Celebrity Invitational 2019 and competed with professional bowler Tommy Jones.

Personal

Betts' parents chose his name in part to form the initials MLB, which correspond to those of Major League Baseball. His parents gave him his nickname Mookie because they watched NBA player Mookie Blaylock on television shortly after he was born . Betts has stated that he has never met Blaylock.

On August 8, 2018, Betts announced that his girlfriend was pregnant with their first child. His first child, a daughter named Kynlee Ivory, was born on November 6, 2018.
