David Taylor Price (born August 26, 1985 in Murfreesboro , Tennessee ) is an American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB). He currently plays as the starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers .

Career

After graduating from high school, Price was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the MLB Draft . However, he chose to accept a Vanderbilt University scholarship and played on the university's college team for three years. In the 2007 MLB Draft he was elected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round as the first player ever. He signed a six-year contract for $ 8.5 million, including $ 5.6 million as a bonus for signing the contract. This was the second largest bonus in the history of the draft; only Justin Upton received more from the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2005 , namely $ 6.1 million. The Rays took Price into their 40-man roster and then sent him to the Minor Leagues . In 2008 he joined the single-A-Team Vero Beach Devil Rays, the Double-A-Team Montgomery Biscuits and finally the Triple-A-Team Durham Bulls.

On September 14, 2008 he made his major league debut as a relief pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays. Eight days later he appeared in a game against the Baltimore Orioles for the first time as a starting pitcher. His first win was not in the regular season , but in Game 2 of the 2008 American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox . In game 7 of this series he posted his first save . In Game 2 of the 2008 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies , he threw 2⅓ innings and gave 2 runs.

His first regular season win came on May 30, 2009 in a game against the Minnesota Twins . He finished the season with a record of 10-7, an ERA of 4.42, 102 strikeouts and 54 walks in 23 starts. In the 2010 season he reached ten wins as the first pitcher of the American League on June 15 and was elected to the All-Star Team of the AL, where he began as a starting pitcher. At the end of the regular season he had achieved 19 wins and thus finished second in the AL (together with Jon Lester). His ERA of 2.72 was the AL's third best. In the 2010 ALCS against the Texas Rangers , he appeared in games 1 and 5 as a starting pitcher. He lost both games to Cliff Lee .
