Justin Brooks Verlander (born February 20, 1983 in Manakin-Sabot , Virginia ) is an American baseball player who competes in Major League Baseball as a starting pitcher for the Houston Astros .

Career

Verlander was drafted as the second pick ever by the Tigers in the first round of the 2004 MLB Draft . In 2006 he was named American League Rookie of the Year . In addition, Verlander was part of the American League All-Star Team in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

On June 12, 2007, he pitched a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers by scoring 12 strikeouts and surrendering only 4 walks . This was the first no-hitter in Comerica Park , established in 2000 , the stadium of the Detroit Tigers. In addition, it was only the sixth no-hitter of a Tiger pitcher in the history of the club. The first pitch against the Brewers last batsman was measured at 102 miles per hour (164 km / h). On May 7, 2011 Verlander managed the second no-hitter of his career in Toronto against the Toronto Blue Jays . He only made one walk and scored four strikeouts. It was also the seventh no-hitter in the history of the Detroit Tigers.

On the last day of the permitted transition period of the 2017 season , Verlander moved to the Houston Astros . There he got in five regular season games, five wins with an ERA of 1.06. In the postseason he played a key role in the subsequent World Series success of his team, winning two wins in both the ALDS and the ALCS . He was awarded the ALCS MVP title. Despite having a solid performance in the World Series and pitching an ERA of 3.75, he still has to wait for his first World Series win . Nevertheless, he was later able to celebrate the first World Series title of his career with the Houston Astros.

Almost eight years after his second no-hitter, Verlander succeeded his third no-hitter on September 1, 2019 as the starting pitcher of the Houston Astros against the Toronto Blue Jays. Verlander threw 120 pitches, scored 14 strikeouts and only gave one walk in this game. He is only the sixth pitcher in the history of the MLB to have three career no-hitters. In Game 2 of the 2019 World Series , he reached his 200 postseason strikeout, making him the sole record holder in this category.

Since 2014 he has been in a relationship with the American model Kate Upton , whom he married on November 4, 2017 in Italy .
