Pedro Martínez (born October 25, 1971 in Manoguayabo , Dominican Republic ) is a former Dominican baseball player . He was considered the highest paid pitcher in the world in 2006 . For the 2005 to 2008 seasons, he is said to have received a total of $ 56 million.
He emigrated with his family to the United States and pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers for the first time in Major League Baseball .
biography
He won the Cy Young Award for best pitcher in the American League (1999 and 2000) and the National League (1997) three times in his career , as well as the Triple Crown (1999). Martinez also played eight times in the All-Star Game . In 2004 he won the World Series with the Boston Red Sox . Due to a torn hamstring in the left calf in September 2006, Martinez had to sideline eight months injured and so missed both the 2006 playoffs and the first half of the 2007 season. For the 2009 season, Martinez moved to the Philadelphia Phillies for a year . He did not sign a contract for the 2010 season , but announced that he would play again in 2011. In December 2010, Martinez told a reporter for El Día newspaper, "I'm beginning to see what it's like to be everyone ... It's so wonderful that I don't want to go back to professional baseball ... but I honestly know I don't know yet whether I will end my career at this point. " The pitcher received some inquiries during the off-season, but did not sign with any team for the 2011 season. On December 4, 2011, he finally announced his official resignation. In 2015 he became a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of the dominant pitchers of the turn of the millennium. In the same year, the Red Sox honored him by blocking his shirt number 45: Martínez became the first player to be honored in this way with only seven years of service for the Red Sox (usually at least 10 years are necessary).
Throwing technique
Martínez was known for his changeup , which he often used to bring his opponents to a strikeout . After several operations on his throwing arm, his fastball lost speed, which he compensated for with his control over the so-called “breaking balls” ( slider , curve ) and the “off-speed pitches” ( circle changeup , forkball ). Martínez was considered one of the best pitchers of his generation, although he never threw a no-hitter : In 1994 he lost a perfect game in the 8th inning when he hit a batter with a wild pitch; In 1995 he was even perfect over nine innings, but since the game was 0-0, it went into overtime, where he received a hit with the 28th batter; In 2000 he finally lost a no-hitter in the 9th inning.
