John Allen Denny (born November 8, 1952 in Prescott , Arizona ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) in the position of pitcher . In 1983 he won the National League's Cy Young Award .

Career

Denny was born in Prescott, Arizona, and attended high school there, where he played baseball, basketball and American football . He was in the 1970 Major League Baseball Draft in the 29th round by the St. Louis Cardinals under contract and played from 1970 to September 1974 in the farm teams of the franchises . Denny made his MLB debut on September 12, 1974 at the age of 21 against the New York Mets . In the game he pitched only against two opposing batsmen and gave up one hit and one point . The game won the Cardinals 12 to 5. A year later he started the season with the Tulsa Oilers in the Triple-A and showed good performance there, so that he was used as a starting pitcher for the Cardinals in the MLB later that year . In 1976 he led the National League in this statistic with an Earned Run Average (ERA) of 2.52 . After three more years with the Cardinals they exchanged him together with Jerry Mumphrey on December 7, 1979 for Bobby Bonds to the Cleveland Indians .

Denny played in Cleveland until mid-September 1982 before moving to the Philadelphia Phillies . With the Indians he came to a total of 56 appearances, 24 won and 23 lost games, with an ERA of 4.18. The 1983 season would be Denny's most successful of his career, winning 19 games, leading the National League in this statistic, losing six games with an ERA of 2.37. Because of these achievements, Denny was awarded the National League's Cy Young Award in 1983 .

In the coming seasons Denny could not build on his performances from 1983 and moved to the 1986 season for the Cincinnati Reds , for which he played his last game in the MLB on August 18, 1986 against the San Diego Padres . In that game he pitched 8 23 innings , threw four strikeouts and allowed eight hits and five points. The Reds won the game 6-5. This was Denny's last win of his career.
