MLB Draft 1970

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1970 MLB Draft was the sixth draft hosted by Major League Baseball . First and foremost, Mike Ivie was selected by the San Diego Padres .

background

In retrospect, the regular and second phases of the January draft proved to be more successful than the June draft. In the first phase of the January draft, Chris Chambliss was selected in the first round by the Cleveland Indians , Greg Minton in the third round by the Kansas City Royals and Joel Youngblood in the second round by the Cincinnati Reds . In the second phase, among others, Doug DeCinces in the third round from the Baltimore Orioles , Rick Burleson in the first round from the Boston Red Sox , Bill Madlock in the fifth round from the Washington Senators and Chris Speier in the first round from the San Francisco Giants .

In the June draft, the teams paid special attention to the catchers when choosing . So of the first four players drafted, three were catchers. Probably the most successful drafts in June were recorded by the Chicago White Sox with the election of the pitcher Terry Foster in the second round and Rich Gossage in the ninth round of the regular phase and infielder Buckey Bent in the first round of the second phase.
