MLB Draft 1966
The 1966 MLB Draft was the second draft hosted by Major League Baseball . First up was Steve Chilcott of the New York Mets .
background
In 1966, the first amateur draft for free agents was held in January. In two rounds, a total of 197 players could be selected who were drafted in the previous year , but subsequently received no contract.
The pitcher Steve Chilcott , who was selected first by the New York Mets in the main draft in June, spent a total of six years in the minor leagues before he had to end his career due to injury. The Mets have been heavily criticized for choosing high school player Chilcott over Reggie Jackson , who was second drafted by the Oakland Athletics and inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992. Although the Mets had little luck with the choice of Chilcott, they still managed to sign the later Hall of Famer Tom Seaver for 50,000 US dollars in the same year .
In the tenth round, the New York Yankees selected the talented pitcher Ken Stabler , who then embarked on a successful career as a quarterback in the National Football League .
