MLB Draft 1980

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1980 MLB Draft was the 16th draft hosted by Major League Baseball . In the first place, Darryl Strawberry was selected by the New York Mets .

background

The 1980 draft was mainly characterized by the choice of Darryl Strawberry in first place by the New York Mets , who became one of the most scandalous players in the history of Major League Baseball . In addition to his sporting successes such as participating in the MLB All-Star Game eight times and winning the World Series four times , he repeatedly attracted attention with drug scandals and physical violence, whereupon he was repeatedly banned from the MLB for a long time. With Kelly Gruber of the Cleveland Indians and Glenn Wilson of the Detroit Tigers , two more All-Star players were drafted in the first round.

Terry Francona (22nd player, Montreal Expos ) is less known as a player than as a coach . Francona has been the manager of the Boston Red Sox since 2004 and has won two World Series titles with them. Billy Beane (23rd player, New York Mets ) made a name for himself as the manager of Oakland Athletics . His active career was also less successful.

Turner Gill, selected in the second round as the 36th overall player by the Chicago White Sox , later became a professional football player and coach. He later worked as an assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers from the National Football League .
