William Lamar "Billy" Beane III (born March 29, 1962 in Orlando , Florida ) is a retired baseball player . He was General Manager (GM) of Oakland Athletics in Major League Baseball from 1997 to 2015 , where he has served as Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations ever since.

life and career

Beane grew up as the son of a naval officer and showed early talent in various sports. When he was 18, he decided to pursue a professional baseball career and was signed by the New York Mets in the 1980 MLB Draft . He turned down a sports scholarship from the renowned Stanford University , which he later described as a big mistake. In the Mets Beane could not prevail and switched to the Minnesota Twins , with whom he won the World Series in 1987 , but completed only 12 games for the A-team across seasons. Even in his last two positions as a player, the Detroit Tigers and the Oakland Athletics, he was not granted any personal sporting success.

Beane became famous for his work for Oakland Athletics, where he first worked as a scout , from 1993 as Assistant GM, from 1997 as GM and since 2015 Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations. Due to the revolutionary introduction of Sabermetrics for player evaluation, which his predecessor Sandy Alderson had already dealt with - albeit to a lesser extent - he systematically redesigned the team from 2000 and managed the financially second-rate club for four years in a row lead into the playoffs, where the team always failed early. These early years are known as the Moneyball Years in the USA . He turned down lucrative job offers from larger clubs, such as the Boston Red Sox in 2002. To this day, under Babe's sporting leadership, the club has been concentrating on engaging underrated young talents and regularly swapping its top players for young athletes. His current contract runs until 2019.

review

Beane's career and achievements as manager of Athletics have been and are positively highlighted in various reports and newspaper reports. The leading US sports magazine Sports Illustrated named Beane in the top ten of the best North American sports managers of the new millennium in 2009 . As early as 2003, the publicist Michael Lewis wrote a non-fiction book about the Moneyball Years entitled Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game . This was filmed in 2011 . Hollywood star Brad Pitt took on the role of Babe .
