MLB Draft 1965

The 1965 MLB Draft was the first draft ever hosted by Major League Baseball . As the first player, Rick Monday was selected by the Kansas City Athletics .

In the first edition of the MLB Draft, a total of 813 players were selected. Some of the better known of these players include catcher Johnny Bench of the Cincinnati Reds (elected in the second round), pitcher Nolan Ryan of the New York Mets (elected in the twelfth round) and infielder Graig Nettles of the Minnesota Twins (elected in the fourth round ). As the first ever drafted player, Joe Coleman , who was drafted third by the Washington Senators in the first round, made his MLB debut on September 28, 1965. The Baltimore Orioles had very little luck . Of their total of 70 selected players, only three subsequently made it into the MLB.
