Florence is an American city with 38,317 inhabitants (2016), located in Florence County , in the northeast of the state of South Carolina . Parts of the city are in neighboring Darlington County . The city has a shopping mall, the Magnolia Mall , a multi-purpose event hall, the Florence Civic Center and a large library. Florence is also home to the Mc Leod Health Center , which makes the city an important medical location. The city is connected to the Interstate Highways I-95 and I-20 . There is also a regional airport a few kilometers east of the city. Florence Regional Airport is served by two airlines ( Delta Air Lines and US Airways ) several times a day.
history
On March 11, 1958, a USAF Boeing B-47 from Hunter Air Force Base, Georgia , accidentally lost an atomic bomb without a detonator at an altitude of 4,200 meters. On the ground, she destroyed a house in Florence and injured a resident.

Florence extends over an area of 45.9 square kilometers and has a population density of 659.8 inhabitants / square kilometer. According to the 2000 census, the city has a population of 30,248. Florence is located at the 34th parallel north and the 79th longitude west (34.184088, −79.774147). Located in the mostly flat Pee Dee region, Jeffries Creek , a tributary of the Pee Dee River , is the main river in Florence.

There are three public high schools in the Florence School District One District : West Florence High School , South Florence High School, and Wilson High School . This also includes Junior High Schools or Middle Schools , Sneed Middle School, Southside Middle School and Williams Middle School, as well as 13 elementary schools . There are also a number of private schools in the city .
Francis Marion University and Florence Darlington Tech College are in the immediate vicinity . Coker College in Hartsville and Coastal Carolina University in Conway are also nearby colleges .
