Francis Marion University (FMU) is an American university in South Carolina near the city ​​of Florence .

The university is named after the war hero Francis Marion and was founded in 1957. It initially only served as a University of South Carolina freshman center until it became a full-fledged college in 1970 .

There are currently about 4,000 students at FMU, 93 percent of whom were born in South Carolina .
