The Outfield is a British pop band from London . In 1985 she released her first album, Play Deep , which went double platinum in the US. Outside the US, The Outfield were less successful and only reached lower chart positions in their home country Great Britain. The Outfield released records well into the early 1990s, when they took a hiatus in the mid-1990s. After they had already toured again in 1998 and subsequently released two live albums, their last album Replay came out in 2011 .

history

Tony Lewis, John Spinks and Alan Jackman first played under the name The Baseball Boys in and around London before a demo submitted in 1984 earned them a contract with Columbia Records . Her debut album Play Deep , which was produced by William Wittman , was released in 1985 and reached double platinum and the top 10 in the USA. With Your Love it also contained a hit that reached number 6 on the Billboard charts . The Outfield went on tour and played among other things as the opening act for Journey and Starship .

In 1986 the second album Bangin ' came out, which could not build on the success of the first album. Nevertheless, with Since You've Been Gone - not to be confused with the hit of the same name by Rainbow and Head East from the 1970s - and No Surrender, two minor hits and received a gold record in the USA . This was followed by a tour of the USA as the opening act for Night Ranger .

For the third album Voices of Babylon in 1989 a new producer was won, so that the sound of the group changed. Both the single Voices of Babylon and My Paradise were minor hits by the band. After the third album, Alan Jackman left the group and was replaced by Paul Reed for a tour. Spinks and Lewis continued The Outfield as a duo, changed record labels and recorded the fourth album Diamond Days at MCA , on which Simon Dawson played drums. The album was released in 1990; the single For You reached the top 20 on the Billboard charts. Her single, One Hot Country, was heard in the 1991 film Teen Agent - When Glances Could Kill .

The next album Rockeye , which was released in 1992, contained Winning It All, a title that was heard in the film Mighty Ducks and was played several times during the broadcast of the NBA Finals by NBC , making it a respectable success for the group. The Outfield got an official third member of the band, Simon Dawson, who had already played drums on Diamond Days and Rockeye . After Rockeye , things became quieter around the band, which in the mid-1990s had a hard time asserting themselves against more edgy groups like Nirvana or Pearl Jam . The Outfield now played mostly in smaller clubs in Great Britain. The 1998 album It Ain't Over was only sold within the band's fan clubs, and Extra Innings from 1999 was a compilation of the band's hits and previously unreleased material. Alan Jackman rejoined The Outfield shortly after 2000. The group released two live albums through their website, Live in Brazil (2001) and The Outfield Live (2005), before a new studio album, Any Time Now , was released in 2006 . In 2009, John Spinks, Tony Lewis and Alan Jackman got together to re-record a studio album after Voices of Babylon in 1988. The album Replay was released in June 2011.

To date, Your Love is the band's most successful single. The title is part of the soundtrack of the 2009 film Adventureland . Katy Perry covered the title under the name Use Your Love in 2008 on her EP Ur So Gay .

Guitarist John Spinks died of liver cancer on July 9, 2014 at the age of 60 .

On March 22, 2018, singer and bassist Tony Lewis, born in 1957, announced a solo album called Out of the Darkness , which was released on June 29, 2018 on the Madison Records label.
