Johnny Lane Oates (born January 21, 1946 in Sylva , North Carolina , † December 24, 2004 in Richmond , Virginia ) was an American baseball player and manager in the major league .

Oates played for various major league teams from 1972 to 1981, but without achieving exceptional success. As a coach, he worked for the Baltimore Orioles from 1991 to 1994 and for the Texas Rangers from 1994 to 2001 . He won the 1993 coach of the year title and the 1998 American League title . He led the Texas Rangers in 1996 for the first time in team history in the major league playoffs. In 1998 and 1999 he managed to win the AL West title with his team . In 2001 Oates was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Contrary to the predictions of his doctors that he only had less than a year to live, he was still alive until the end of 2004.

His former shirt number, the 26, is no longer awarded by the Texas Rangers.
