history

The forerunner of Gadsden was a village founded by white settlers as "Double Springs". The village was founded in 1825 by John Riley, a man of white and Native American ancestry. His house still exists and can be visited. The brothers Gabriel and Asenath Hughes built a farm in 1840. They wanted to rename the settlements after Captain James Lafferty in "Lafferty's Landing", but the city was named after Colonel James Gadsden from South Carolina.

After the Civil War , Baine County was established by the Alabama legislature ; Gadsden was incorporated and made the county seat. In 1868, the Republican majority dissolved Baine County and re-established it as Etowah County. Gadsden remained the county seat.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the decline began with the departure of industry. An article in Rand McNally named Gadsden as one of the seven worst cities to live in in America. In 2000, after heavy investment, the city made it onto a list of the best cities to improve the quality of life.
