Phillip Alford

Phillip Alford (born September 11, 1948 in Gadsden , Alabama ) is a retired American actor.

life and career

As a child, Phillip Alford played in a local theater in his city of Birmingham , Alabama. The theater director called the boy to audition for the role of Jem Finch in Who the Nightingale Disturbs (1962), the film adaptation of Harper Lee's hit novel of the same name about the racist southern states in the 1930s. Alford didn't want to go to audition at first until his mother promised him that he could be away from school for half a day to do it. Alford was able to convince both in the audition and in the subsequent test recordings and thus won the role of Jem Finch alongside Gregory Peck and Mary Badham in the film adaptation. Those who disturb the nightingale won numerous prizes and became a classic film.

After this success, Alford played a few roles on television, for example in The People of Shiloh Ranch . His second and last film was the western The Man from the Great River (1965), where he could be seen in a bigger role alongside James Stewart . In 1972, the then 24-year-old Alford retired from the acting business. Today he lives again in his hometown Birmingham and works there successfully as a businessman. Alford is married with two children. He was inducted into the Alabama Walk of Fame in 1989 for his role in Who Disturbs the Nightingale . 2015 Alford appeared in a documentary about the TV producers Hamner Jr. Earl on.
