Gerhard Morgenstjerne Munthe

Gerhard Arij Ludwig "Morgenstjerne" Munthe (born August 7, 1875 in Düsseldorf , † May 15, 1927 in Leiden ) was a Norwegian marine painter who worked most of his artistic life in the Netherlands .

Life

Munthe was born in Düsseldorf as the son of the Norwegian painter Ludvig Munthe . On June 1, 1872, his father married Lene Wilhelmina Vlierboom (1853–1901), the daughter of a Dutch shipowner, from the Netherlands. The couple had four children, including the later portrait and genre painter Christopher Munthe . Even in his youth, Gerhard added the epithet Morgenstjerne ( morning star ) to his name in order to differentiate himself from his relatives of the same name, Gerhard Munthe , who was also a painter. Munthe grew up in Düsseldorf, where he also attended the art academy . Munthe developed a particular interest in the coastal landscapes of Holland, which he had got to know early on while traveling together with his father to Katwijk aan Zee . After his father died in 1896, Munthe and his mother moved to The Hague in 1897 . In 1901 he and his wife, Christine van Gendt, moved into an apartment in Katwijk. He later moved several times, most recently to Noordwijk and Noordwijkerhout . Munthe was a member of the Hague artists' association Pulchri Studio and Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam . In 1905 and 1910 he exhibited at the Salon de Paris . At the age of 51 he died in a Leiden hospital.

Munthe was strongly influenced in his painting by the Hague School , for example by Jacob Maris , Hendrik Willem Mesdag and Anton Mauve . Many of his works can be seen in the Kröller-Müller Museum near Otterlo and in the Katwijks Museum.
