Ludvig Munthe (painter)
Ludvig Munthe (born March 11, 1841 in Årøy near Sogndal , Norway ; † March 30, 1896 in Düsseldorf , Rhine Province ) was a Norwegian landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .
Life
Munthe was the third of eight children of the farmer Gerhard Munthe (1791–1878) and Sigrid (née Urnæs, 1811–1904). He was initially a student of Franz Wilhelm Schiertz , but then, at the age of 20, went to Düsseldorf for further training, where he was a private student of Sophus Jacobsen and Albert Flamm . From 1863 until his death in 1896 Munthe was a member of the Düsseldorf artists ' association “ Malkasten ”.
During his time he was the most famous Norwegian painter abroad, alongside Johan Christian Clausen Dahl and Hans Gude . His main motifs were melancholy, atmospheric autumn and winter landscapes and beach scenes with fishermen's staffage .
Munthe was also a member of the Academy of Arts in Stockholm and Copenhagen .
On June 1, 1872, Munthe married the Dutch Lene Wilhelmina Vlierboom (born March 6, 1853 in Rotterdam , Netherlands , † February 20, 1901 in The Hague ), the daughter of the shipowner Ary Vlierboom and Eva Schalkwyck. The couple had four children, including the later marine painter Gerhard Morgenstjerne Munthe (1875–1927) and the portrait and genre painter Christopher Munthe (* 1879).
