Franz Wilhelm Schiertz
Franz Wilhelm Schiertz (born August 4, 1813 in Leipzig , † October 6, 1887 in Balestrand , Norway ) was a German-Norwegian painter and architect .
Life
Schiertz was a son of the furrier Johann Friedrich Elias Schiertz and studied at the Dresden Art Academy as a pupil of the Norwegian painter Johan Christian Clausen Dahl (1788-1857). It is not known whether he also completed an apprenticeship in architecture or building construction; at first he made a name for himself exclusively as a landscape painter.
Because of his talent for drawing, Schiertz was sent to Norway in 1836 to make architectural drawings of the stave churches in Borgund, Heddal and Urnes for an illustrated book. They appeared in Dahl's work on Norwegian timber structures in 1837.
In 1841 the stave church in Vang was auctioned. After Dahl's efforts to leave them in the country failed, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV took them over . Schiertz was commissioned to monitor and document the dismantling, transport and rebuilding near Bad Warmbrunn in Lower Silesia as the Wang Stave Church .
In 1844 he accompanied Dahl on another trip to Norway. In the revolutionary year of 1848 Schiertz was on the side of the rebels. He had to leave Dresden and went to Bergen (Norway) in 1851 , where he also worked as an architect from around 1855.
On May 10, 1856, he married the Norwegian Karen Sophie Reusch Koren (born August 26, 1832 in Bergen; † March 23, 1933) in Selje (Norway), the daughter of Paul Schonevig Stub Koren and Henriette Christiana Rulfs.
From 1876 to 1878 he took part as a draftsman in the Norwegian North Sea expedition led by Henrik Mohn and Georg Ossian Sars with the steamer Vøringen . On the island of Jan Mayen a mountain was named Schiertzegga in his honor .
Schiertz gave lessons in drawing to Fridtjof Nansen and Ludvig Munthe .
His grave is in the Tjugum cemetery opposite Balestrand.

Paintings and drawings
For a long time his paintings showed idealized, meaningful landscapes like those of Dahl and Peder Balke, and he did not follow the realistic representation of Hans Gude, for example . Therefore it was soon forgotten.
