Church in Ambla

The parish of Ambla was founded around 1220 when the native Estonians were Christianized. The first church was built around 1270 and dedicated to Mary , the Mother of God . The name of the community comes from the Latin Amplae Mariae (Great Mighty Maria). The church is the oldest preserved sacred building in Central Estonia and with its 49.5 meter high tower built in 1857, it is a symbol of the community.
