The essential commonality of these approaches is the assumption that every person has the potential to have experiences that "transcend" the personal identification of the ego . These experiences should have a healing effect and decisively promote personality development. The most important elements and goals of transpersonal psychotherapy are thus the realization of a transpersonal experience and the integration of this experience.

overview

The techniques used are very diverse. Are important spiritual experience ways of religions such elements of Eastern meditation , Christian contemplation and other traditions like the Sufism , Shamanism or Jewish mysticism ( Kabbalah ), next to the more physically oriented therapies such as body therapies of Wilhelm Reich or initiatory therapy of Professor Durckheim . What they all have in common is an emphasis on mindfulness or the conscious focus on the body, the sensations or simply "existence". On this basis, the psychosynthesis (humanistic, positive psychotherapy approach ) by Roberto Assagioli and currently a transpersonal behavioral therapy developed .

A transpersonal psychotherapy is therefore often composed of a spiritual technique and a psychotherapy that is in the context of Western psychology. There is criticism from both sides. On the one hand, academic and clinical psychology are usually hostile to a mixture of spiritual and psychological approaches. The reasons for this are often different models and goals with regard to personality and health . Representatives of religious traditions also reject transpersonal approaches in psychotherapy for similar reasons, often pointing out that no spiritual tradition aims at the realization of mystical or transpersonal experiences regardless of the respective cultural and religious context.
