Arnold Mindell (born January 1, 1940 ) is an American psychotherapist and specialist book author. He founded process-oriented psychology . He lives in Portland , Oregon. His 19 books have been published in 20 languages.

Life and work

After graduating in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Mindell moved to Zurich to continue his physics studies. His two children, Lara Mindell and Robin Mindell, were born there, both of whom now live in Switzerland and work as psychotherapists. In Switzerland Mindell got to know the work of the depth psychologist CG Jung and shifted the focus of his studies to analytical psychology . He graduated as a Jungian Analyst from the CG Jung Institute . It was also at the CG Jung Institute in Zurich where he received Dr. Marie-Louise von Franz , who was doing intensive research on the relationship between the unconscious psyche and matter. After a period of intensive scientific and personal exchange, Arnold Mindell became fascinated by the connections between physical experience, especially physical symptoms, and how these are reflected in dreams. Mindell published his research in 1982 in his first book, Dreambody: The Body's Role in Revealing the Self (Dream Body: The Role of the Body in Revealing the Self) . A key experience in this area was an experience with his son, which he reports in the first chapter of this book. This was followed by investigations into how the dreaming mind produces unconscious or 'double' signals in us while we are in relationships with other people. In Mindell's view, interpersonal communication would be facilitated if these signals were brought to the fore from the background.

The focus was on trying to follow signals and processes . Hence Mindell began to call his work 'process-oriented psychology'. His interest in relationships expanded to include studies of conflict in larger groups. He discovered that the dream processes that he had identified on the level of individuals and two-way relationships were also fruitful for problem solving in larger, socially different groups. In groups, the process is carried not only by individuals, but by 'roles' that can be assumed by each person in the group. 'Ghost roles' can also be derived from the behavior of the group as a whole, but no individual would identify with them.

After publishing several books about his discoveries, he turned his interest back to physics and studied subtle signals that are mostly neglected by classical psychological approaches. With his partner and wife Amy Mindell, he developed methods for working with patients in coma or with near-death experiences. His interest in quantum physics led to research on the links between psychology and theoretical physics. Mindell has an active part of an international research community that process work studied and taught. He says of his own motivation: 'I still love the idea of nature, and following the Tao seems to be the recurring and romantic backdrop for everything I do.'
